The Boy Who Knew What the Birds Said

Padraic Colum 1881 1972 was an Irish poet, novelist, dramatist, biographer and collector of folklore. He was one of the leading figures of the Celtic Revival. At the age of seventeen, he passed an exam for and was awarded a clerkship in the Irish Railway Clearing House. He stayed in this job until 1903. During this period, Colum started to write and met a number of the leading Irish writers of the time. His earliest published poems appeared in The United Irishman. His first book, Wild Earth 1907 collected many of these poems. In 1911 he founded the short lived literary journal The Irish Review. In 1914, Colum travelled to the USA where he took up children’s writing and published a number of collections of stories for children, beginning with The King of Ireland’s Son 1916. In 1922 he started writing novels. Amongst his other works are Three Plays 1916, The Boy Who Knew What the Birds Said 1918, The Children of Odin: The Book of Northern Myths 1920 and The Golden Fleece and the Heroes Who Lived Before Achilles 1921.

The Children’s Homer

Born and raised in a Longford, Ireland workhouse, Padraic Colum left at seventeen to become a clerk in the Irish Railway Clearing House in Dublin. This venture was short lived, however, and with the success of a few poems and a play, ‘The Saxon Shillin’,’ he left in 1904 to pursue a career in writing. His success as a dramatist, poet, novelist, essayist, biographer, children’s writer and editor, as well as his participation in the founding of the Abbey Theatre, made Colum a central figure in the Irish literary renaissance. Colum wrote ‘The Adventures of Odysseus and the Tale of Troy’ in 1918 as a retelling of Homer’s epic poems, ‘Iliad’ and ‘Odyssey,’ intended for younger readers. It recounts the perilous adventures of Odysseus on his journey back from the war in Troy, including his encounter with the horrible Cyclops, the duplicitous Sirens, and the evil Circe. One of Colum’s many successful children’s novels, these stories will be enjoyed as much today as they were nearly a century ago.

The Golden Fleece

Play script. From England. Ballad style play out of the legendary tale of ‘Jason and The Golden Fleece.’ Bare stage, which lends itself to various settings. Ancient Greek costumes. Cast of 5 F, 10 M.

The sea runs high, and though their families are hungry, for days the fishermen have been unable to launch their boats. Father Poseidon is angry. To appease him, the fisher folk decide to sing and play for him something big, an epic about a big man, like Jason. Beginning with song, they don homely costume touches, and picking up a few handy props, they improvise the King’s court at Loichos. From there, caught up in the vast sweep of Jason’s adventures, they quite forget the high seas, as they pursue this enthralling tale.
