Book Description:
This report concludes that, while the Environment Agency provides well managed and professional water resource management services, there is scope to improve the efficiency of its operations. Looking at the Agency's activities in England, the NAO identifies GBP 450,000 a year in net savings that could be achieved. The NAO also found potential savings of between GBP 1 million and GBP 2 million a year which could be achieved through internal cost reallocation and passed on to water abstraction license holders. Gains are possible in a number of areas, including: improved allocation of costs between water resource management and flood management functions; better planning of the network of water monitoring sites; consistent internal charging for maintenance work; and better prioritisation based on risk of inspection visits to monitoring sites. This report will be of particular interest to major water users, to those with an interest in environmental management, and those with a general interest in government efficiency.
