Book Description:
The Committee has established an inquiry to examine a number of issues relating to the proposals for increased European involvement in transport policy, including the appropriateness of the European Community's responsibilities and their likely extent in the future; the suitability of European transport competence to the UK situation; issues of subsidiarity and proportionality; the air service agreement negotiations with the United States; the European Commission's proposals on road user charging and proposals for legislation on pollution from ships. The Committee was unable to hold a meeting with the new European Transport Commissioner to discuss these issues, and therefore has decided it would be unwise to publish a definitive report. Instead, this publication contains the written and oral evidence received by the Committee during the course of its inquiry, with the aim of highlighting key issues which might be considered in the future by a successor Committee.
