Acorna: The Unicorn Girl

‘Something’s Alive In There!’She was just a little girl, with a tiny horn in the center of her forehead, funny looking feet, beautiful silver hair, and several curious powers: the ability to purify air and water, make plants grow, and heal scars and broken bones. A trio of grizzled prospectors found her drifting in an escape pod amid the asteroids, adopted her, and took her to the bandit planet Kezdet, a place where no questions are asked and the girl might grow up free. But Kezdet has its own dark secret. The prosperity of the planet is based on a hideous trade in child slave labor, administered by ‘The Piper’ a mystery man with special plans for Acorna and her powers. But free little girls have a way of growing into freedom loving young women, and Acorna has special plans all her own…

With her ‘Uncle’ Calum, one of the three grizzled asteroid prospectors who rescued, protected, and raised her, she sets off to find her people. No sooner does she leave than a mysterious craft appears, piloted by the Linyaari, a gentle race with telepathic powers. The Linyaari are roaming the galaxy, spreading the alarm about the deadly Khleev And searching for a beloved little girl they had given up for lost, long ago…

Acorna’s People

Filled with adventure and wonder, Acorna’s Peoplecontinues the enthralling saga of Acorna, the beautiful, brave, and kindhearted creature known as the Unicorn Girl.’Welcome Home, Linyaari Child!’With the help of her ‘uncles’ and the thousands of humans who love and admire her, Acorna has found her true people, the peaceful, telepathic Linyaari. But Acorna still has much to do before she can enjoy her new home. The legendary resting place of the lost Linyaari ancestors has yet to be found. And with the help of a rogue spacetrader and his feline sidekick, Acorna must strive to right an unspeakable wrong and defeat an enemy even crueler than the Khleevi. Along the way, she will at last uncover the Universe’s most carefully guarded secret the true nature of the ancient link between the Linyaari and the space faring humans she has also come to think of as her ‘people.’

Acorna’s World

Acorna the ‘unicorn girl’ found as a baby years ago, abandoned and floating alone in an escape pod at the far end of the galaxy has made peace with her past, her ‘Linyaari’ heritage, and with the powerful ‘differences’ that set her apart from the loving humans who raised her. But only in the deep reaches of limitless space can she truly feel at home. Now, aboard the interplanetary salvage vessel ‘Condor,’ Acorna is free once more, traveling through space in the company of her good friend, ship’s commander Captain Jonas Becker, his gargantuan feline ‘first mate’ Roadkill, and Aari, a proud ‘Linyaari’ survivor of torture at the hands of the savage, bug like ‘Khleevi.’ But the journey is interrupted when a transmitted distress call faint but undeniable draws Acorna and her companions down to the surface of a nearby planet. What awaits them is a world of wonders, shrouded in an atmosphere of strange, intoxicating perfumes. Intelligent, sentiment plants help guide Acorna, Becker, Aari, and RK to the source of the SOS. But a broken, burned out alien ship is all they find, the pitiful remnants of a relentlessly brutal yet carefully coordinated assault. To Acorna, the signs are unmistakable. This is the grim handiwork of the cold blooded species that seeks the complete eradication of all human and ‘Linyaari’ life from the galaxy…

She hears the song, which happens to concern her recently married sister and a gypsy. The story is rich with descriptive details of setting and encounters with magical and fantastic creatures such as a talking cat, a lovesick dragon, and a bear prince. It seems like the end of the world when she also becomes too sick to eat and starts seeing ghosts and hearing mysterious chanting within the noises of the camp. And the chase is on for whomever gets access to Cleopatra’s genetic material will also gain access to all of her knowledge. And though some want to channel Cleopatra for love, others have far more sinister motives.

Powers That Be

Strange things were happening on the icy planet called Petaybee. Unauthorized genetically engineered species had been spotted, while some people were simply disappearing. None of the locals were talking to the company, so the company sent disabled combat veteran Yanaba Maddock to spy. But a strange thing happened. With her relocation to the arctic planet came a return of Yana’s health and strength. And the more she got to know the people of Petaybee, the more determined she became to protect her new home…
.

Power Lines

‘A felicitous combination of authors.’ Kirkus ReviewsYanaba Maddock’s short lived career as a company spy had ended the moment the planet Petaybee and its people had adopted her as one of their own. Now she was dedicated to keeping Intergal from exploiting and wounding or even killing the world she had come to love. For Intergal persisted in denying that Petaybee was sentient, and nothing would stop it from stripping the ore rich planet sentient or not. Only solid evidence would convince the company to leave the planet alone, and for all its sentience, Petaybee’s communications were highly subjective; indeed, some outsiders seemed entirely immune to its voice. So Yana and her friends would have to find some other way to prove that the planet was worth more to the company alive than dead…
Power Lines is a strong, highly entertaining sequel…
Nicely paced, with a tricky twist or two to keep it from getting too predictable, and some delightful characters.’ LocusFIRST TIME IN PAPERBACK

Power Play

Petaybee was growing up. Day by day, the sentient planet like any child was learning to recognize and understand the meaning of outside stimuli, to respond to those stimuli, to communicate its own needs and desires…
even to use human speech. But few outsiders truly cared for the feelings and intelligence of what they perceived to be a giant hunk of rock or a mere oddity to be gawked at. Some came to worship the newly awakened soul. Some came by invitation, but without comprehension, to harvest the almost magically curative native plants. Big game hunters came chasing rumors of fantastical creatures that simply gave themselves up for the killing. And tourists came in droves, many of them searching for long lost relatives among those whom Intergal had relocated to Petaybee during its colonization phase. The Petaybeans had their hands full trying to protect their beloved planet from the sudden influx of visitors. Then some of Petaybee’s staunchest champions Yanaba Maddock, Marmion de Revers Algemeine, Bunny Rourke, and Diego Metaxos were kidnapped. The perpetrators wanted Petaybee for its incredible mineral wealth. Their other attempts at plundering the planet had all failed, and now they were determined to force the Petaybeans to make a trade: the planet for the people. They simply didn’t understand that such a bargain was impossible. For the only one who could speak for Petaybee was Petaybee itself and no one knew what a living planet could do once it found its voice…

To protect their children, Sean and Yana send them to stay with a powerful family friend on an orbiting space station. To investigate the startling occurrence, Sean heads out to the open water in his seal form. But the newly unstable region holds untold mysteries and the potential for disaster. Murel and Ronan set out to persuade the frightened refugees to come out of hiding, leave their world, and bring along their sacred totem animals, the gifted sea turtles called the Honus. But the twins discover that they ve taken on more than they expected: The Honus are not the only animals sacred to the refugees. There are also the Manos, intelligent sharks who have lost none of their predatory habits and who cannot be left behind to die. When the Manos are released into Petaybee’s waters, a tragic misunderstanding endangers the whole resettlement operation. At the same time, the mysterious sea otters who once rescued the twins father are suddenly revealed to be much more than they appear to be. Now it is up to Ronan and Murel, with the intrepid assistance of their river otter friend Sky, to smooth the waters before a maelstrom of revenge destroys Petaybee s harmonious way of life. Catalyst (By:Anne McCaffrey)

Pilot, navigator, engineer, doctor, scientist ship’s cat? All are essential to the well staffed space vessel. Since the early days of interstellar travel, when Tuxedo Thomas, a Maine coon cat, showed what a cat could do for a ship and its crew, the so called Barque Cats have become highly prized crew members. Thomas’s carefully bred progeny, ably assisted by humans Cat Persons with whom they share a deep and loving bond, now travel the galaxy, responsible for keeping spacecraft free of vermin, for alerting human crews to potential environmental hazards, and for acting as morale officers. Even among Barque Cats, Chessie is something special. Her pedigree, skills, and intelligence, as well as the close rapport she has with her human, Janina, make her the most valuable crew member aboard the Molly Daise. And the litter of kittens in her belly only adds to her value. Then the unthinkable happens. Chessie is kidnapped er, catnapped from Dr. Jared Vlast’s vet clinic at Hood Station by a grizzled spacer named Carl Poindexter. But Chessie’s newborn kittens turn out to be even more extraordinary than their mother. For while Chessie’s connection to Janina is close and intuitive, the bond that the kitten Chester forms with Carl’s son, Jubal, is downright telepathic. And when Chester is sent into space to learn his trade, neither he nor Jubal will rest until they’re reunited. But the announcement of a widespread epidemic affecting livestock on numerous planets throws their future into doubt. Suddenly the galactic government announces a plan to impound and possibly destroy all exposed animals. Not even the Barque Cats will be spared. With the clock racing against them, Janina, Jubal, Dr. Vlast, and a handful of very special kittens will join forces with the mysterious Pshaw Ra an alien looking cat with a hidden agenda to save the Barque Cats, other animals, and quite possibly the universe as they know it from total destruction.

Catacombs (By:Anne McCaffrey)

In Catalyst, award winning authors Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough introduced listeners to the beguiling Barque Cats: spacefaring felines who serve aboard starships as full fledged members of the crew. Highly evolved, the cats share an almost telepathic bond with their minders, or Cat Persons until, suddenly, there is no almost about it, and a particular Barque Cat, Chester, learns to ex change thoughts with his human friend, Jubal. Other cats soon gain the same ability. Behind the seeming miracle is a mysterious cat named Pshaw Ra, who possesses knowledge and technology far beyond anything the Barque Cats or their humans have ever seen. When fear of a virulent plague leads the government first to quarantine and then to kill all animals suspected of infection, Pshaw Ra with the help of Chester, Jubal, and the crew of the starship Ranzo activates a mousehole in space that carries the refugees to a place of safety: Pshaw Ra’s home planet of Mau, where godlike cats are worshiped by human slaves. But Pshaw Ra s actions are less noble than they appear. The scheming cat plans to mate the Barque Cats with his own feline stock, creating a hybrid race of superior cats a race destined to conquer the universe. Yet right from the start, his plans go awry. For one thing, there s a new queen on Mau: Pshaw Ra s daughter Nefure, a spoiled brat er, cat with a temper as short as her attention span. Pshaw Ra s other daughter, the rightful queen Renpet, is exiled, running for her life in the only direction available to her down into the vast catacombs beneath the Mauan desert. Far from receiving the hero s welcome he expected, Pshaw Ra must use every bit of his considerable cleverness just to survive. Meanwhile, as usual, Chester and Jubal stumble right into the middle of things, in the process uncovering the lost secrets of the Mauan civilization. But that s not all they uncover. In the forgotten catacombs deep below the Mauan capital, something has awakened. Something as old as the universe. Something that hungers to devour all light and life and that bears an undying hatred for cats.

The Harem of Aman Akbar

The Djinn Decanted: By his genie’s standards, Aman Akbar was a pervert. He was not content to marry his cousin, the beauteous Hyaganoosh, as custom demanded. Just about the time the women were sorting out the whole polygamy thing and dealing with their new mother in law, Um Aman, Aman Akbar lost control of the genie and got turned into a white ass it happens a lot in the Arabian Nights at the wish of none other than Hyaganoosh. What’s a foreign wife to do? The three women and Aman Akbar’s mother have no choice but to seek a way to undo the spell and restore the fellow to his former shape and state but along the way they have some hair raising adventures involving monkeys, shape shifters called peris, the dangerous divs who make the djinn look jolly, and a rather nice elephant.’Delightful reading! Shades of Scheherazade and Sinbad in the sort of Scarboroughian treat that one is beginning to expect of this beguiling writer.’ Anne McCaffreyElizabeth Ann Scarborough is the winner of the 1989 Nebula Award for Best novel.

The Healer’s War

Although perhaps best known for her lightly humorous fantasies and for her collaborations with Anne McCaffrey on the Petaybee series and the Acorna series, Elizabeth Anne Scarborough has also written Healer’s War, a classic novel of the Vietnam War, enriched with a magical, mystical twist, which won the 1989 Nebula Award for Best Novel of 1988. The Minneapolis Star Tribune called it ‘A brutal and beautiful book.’ Scarborough herself was a nurse in Vietnam during the war and she draws on her own personal experiences to create the central character, Lt. Kitty McCulley. McCulley, a young and inexperienced nurse tossed into a stressful and chaotic situation, is having a difficult time reconciling her duty to help and heal with the indifference and overt racism of some of her colleagues and with the horrendously damaged soldiers and Vietnamese civilians whom she encounters during her service at the China Beach medical facilities. She is unexpectedly helped by the mysterious and inexplicable properties of an amulet, given to her by one of her patients, an elderly, dying Vietnamese holy man, which allows her to see other people’s ‘auras’ and to understand more about them as a result. This eventually leads to a strange, almost surrealistic journey through the jungle, accompanied by a one legged boy and a battle seasoned but crazed soldier and, by the end of the journey, McCulley has found herself and a way to live and survive through the madness and destruction.
