Charlotte MacLeod Books Overview

Rest You Merry

CONTINUING THE DEFINITIVE SERIES OF CLASSIC MYSTERIES BY AMERICAN MYSTERY AND NERO WOLFE AWARD WINNING AUTHOR CHARLOTTE MacLEOD For years, Professor Peter Shandy has been badgered by Jemima Ames, Assistant Librarian and Annual Chairperson, to decorate his campus home for the Grand Illumination which is Balaclava Agricultural College’s main fund raising event. Now he can hold out no longer. Goaded to madness, he buries his small brick house under an avalanche of plastic reindeer, flashing lights, and fake Santa Clauses. Hooks up an amplifier blaring ‘All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth,’ locks the switches at ‘on,’ and escapes to sea on a tramp steamer. Shipwrecked and conscience stricken, he crawls back to face his irate colleagues, and finds Jemima Ames dead on his living room floor. Police and security guards say it’s an accident; Shandy says it’s murder. President Thorkjeld Svenson says he’d better find out the truth without wrecking the Illumination…
or the next corpse will be Shandy’s.

The Family Vault

Great uncle Frederick could be counted on to be difficult to the end, and beyond. Sarah Kelling is therefore not surprised when her relative’s burial has to be switched at the last minute to a long abandoned family vault in an historic Beacon Hill cemetery. She is, however, as appalled as the rest of her blue blood clan when the ruby studded skeleton of a flamboyant burlesque queen, who had vanished some thirty years before, turns up in Uncle Fred’s chosen resting place. The Kellings have barely gotten former Fred decently interred before Sarah begins to realize that she and her family are somehow at the vortex of a complex murder plot that stretches far into the past and is moving, inexorably and horrifyingly, into the present. Charlotte MacLeod has written short stories and articles for both adults and children, several teen age mystery novels, and ASTROLOGY FOR SKEPTICS, which has been published both in the United States and abroad.

The Bilbao Looking Glass

‘Sarah Kelling/Max Bittersohn’ Series Sarah Kelling and her art detective friend, Max Bittersohn, arrive at her summer home to find a lovely old Bilbao looking glass. Sarah’s never seen this precious antique before so, mindful of burglaries, Max calls the police. Appie Kelling arrives, bringing her own special brand of total chaos, her son, Lionel, and her four grandsons. They make Genghis Kahn’s horde look like a bunch of sissies, but are they really thieves, arsonists, and killers? Somebody is, that’s for sure. Max and Sarah have to battle their way through a wall of social prejudice, a maze of conflicting clues, and some extremely sticky situations before they find out who’s taken them on this perilous trip through the looking glass. ‘MacLeod shows once again why her Crime Club novels have put her in the front ranks among mystery fans here and abroad.’ Cleveland Plain Dealer

The Convivial Codfish

After years of toiling upward through the ranks, Jeremy Kelling has finally attained his goal: to preside as Exalted Chowderhead over the Annual Scrooge Day revels of the Comrades of The Convivial Codfish. Suddenly, at the height of the ceremonies, Jeremy discovers that he’s been robbed of his extremely valuable emblem of office. The Great Chain of the Convivial Cod is gone! He calls his new nephew in law, Max Bittersohn, who isn’t inclined to take the Codfish seriously until Jeremy falls victim to what may, or may not, be a particularly vicious practical joke. From then on, it’s champagne, caviar, and cold blooded mass mayhem in high society as Max puts his life on the line to find a killer.

The Plain Old Man

Sarah Kelling/Max Bittersohb series Sarah’s Aunt Emma’s theater troupe is doing THE SORCERER as Emma has always hankered to play Lady Sangazure. Perhaps she made a bad choice, though, by casting a well connected con man in the title role. It’s no mere evil spell that leaves Charlie Daventer dead on his bathroom floor. But the show must go on. Cousin Frederick is hurled into the breach. Old Fred really can’t tolerate the general assumption that his friend Charlie died by accident. He convinces Sarah that a murder has been committed. Sarah’s husband, Max the detective, is off in Finland so she tackles the case herself. Clues aren’t hard to find. Sarah sorts them out only to learn when the curtain falls that the show is far from over. ‘Delightful fun with plenty of mystery to keep the pages turning.’ Booklist

On the ferry, Emma’s Gladstone bag is temporarily stolen. Could someone have mistaken those junk jewels for real diamonds? She meets her guests to be who inform her they plan to dig for Pocapuk’s legendary pirate treasure without having bothered to get Adelaide’s permission. On the island, her bag is heisted again, a trespassing scuba diver is found dead, and a mysterious stranger is off on a rampage of attempted murders. The Resurrection Man

Boston based art detectives Sarah Kelling and husband Max Bittersohn were hoping for some time off after their last case, especially since Max is still recovering from a broken leg he suffered during the investigation. That hope dies quickly, though, when they run into Countess Lydia Ouspenska. The Countess, an expert forger of Byzantine icons, tells them that an old acquaintance, Bartolo Arbalest known in their circles as ‘The Resurrection Man‘ because of his skills in restoring damaged works of art has set up a Renaissance style ‘guild’ in their fair city, with a number of artisans working independently under one roof. Nothing mysterious about that, of course except for the fact that some of Boston’s wealthiest citizens have been murdered shortly after valuable objets d’arts restored by Arbalest’s organization were returned to them. When Sarah’s old friend George Protherie becomes the latest victim, her investigation which, coming as no surprise, ties in with Max’s search into Arbalest’s background reveals that Protherie was not the staid Boston Brahmin he appeared. In fact, he was guarding an array of secrets that stretch back to his old days as an importer of oriental antiquities…

And, to add insult to injury, someone attempts to steal a vintage Rolls. It will take all of Max’s formidable skills as the world’s greatest expert on art theft to get to the bottom of these nuptials turned nasty.
