Roy Lewis Books Overview

A Secret Dying

Assigned to finish a research project started by a colleague who has mysteriously disappeared, an antiquities expert travels to England where he picks up the trail of the missing woman and decides to investigate. By the author of The Devil is Dead.

An Assumption of Death

This is the latest in the Arnold Landon series in which Northumberland based archaeologist Landon finds himself mixed up in a drugs related murder and the seemingly innocent activities of a closed and wealthy cult.’

Dead Secret

What appears to be a simple land dispute turns deadly in this smart new mystery that takes archaeologist Arnold Landon to the ancient Pentire Woods in rural Northumberland and calls upon all his considerable intelligence and abundant knowledge of history before a baffling case of murder yields its solution. The announcement that the long unsullied and unpolluted Pentire Woods have been designated as the site for a highway bypass has already set a series of disturbing events in motion by the time Landon arrives. Two people adamantly opposed to a plan that will destroy the wood are the landowner himself and an archaeologist eager to explore the peat bog where the ancient, perfectly preserved body of the ‘Wolf Man’ has been discovered. Summoned to as*sess the archaeological value of the site, Landon and his colleague, Portia, find themselves walking a tightrope between the developers, the politicians, the owner, and the inevitable protesters against ecological damage. When one of the protesters is found dead, Landon and Portia also find themselves dealing with murder. Their investigation ratchets up, as does the suspense, and much more is at stake in this adroitly crafted tale than the fate of the Pentire Woods.

Headhunter

The wind in Headhunter is a chilling one, and Arnold Landon may require a good deal more than archeological know how in solving a case that could quite literally be the death of him. Here, the headless torso of a child has been fished out of the Tyne. The police can neither identify the corpse nor discover a motive for the gruesome, perhaps ritualistic killing, although they have reason to suspect it might be connected to a network of pedophiles. So it is that the constabulary launches Operation Headhunter, which comes to the attention of Interpol and a bizarre case of murder becomes a hunt for a serial killer. Arnold doesn t need to further complicate his life with an official murder investigation. His work at the burial site of an ancient Roman chariot is already running short on time and money, and tensions among his colleagues are beginning to mount. He is nonetheless unwittingly drawn into the case when, by error, he comes into possession of a file filled with po*rnographic material. Unwittingly, too, he is drawn into the path of a ruthless killer and is ultimately lured to an ancient burial site, where Arnold may find a grave all his own.

Grave Error

Archaeologist Arnold Landon’s attendance at a conference in Rome leads him into the world of professional grave robbers, when he stumbles upon a revenge killing in the Etruscan city of the dead. Back in less glamorous Northumberland, DCI O’Connor has his own problems, investigating an international smuggling ring in ancient artifacts. The paths of the two men converge when a professional killer arrives to continue the blood feud begun in Italy. For Landon and O’Connor the solution seems to lie in the whereabouts of a missing antiques dealer.

Dragon Head

A surprising offer from a Chinese businessman leads archaeologist Arnold Landon into the world of a corrupt, centuries old criminal organization known as the Syndicate of the Ghost Shadow. While the lives of two female colleagues are at risk, Arnold finds himself under the control of the Dragon Head himself. And, on a rain swept Northumbrian coast, he finally learns the power of revenge.

Shadowmaker

Asked to advise on the antiques collection of a mysterious widow, Arnold Landon enlists the aid of an old friend, Carmela Cacciatore of the Carabinieri Art Squad. He soon finds himself drawn into the investigation of an antiquities smuggling operation which leads to murder in La Rochelle, the involvement of the CIA and the hunt for an ancient religious manuscript looted from the Baghdad Museum after the fall of Saddam Hussein. And lurking in the background is the threatening figure of an assassin trained by SAVAK, the murderous secret service established by the Shah of Iran, the Peacock Prince. But it is in Northumberland that Arnold finally learns the truth and faces the deadly menace of the Shadowmaker.

A Form of Death / The Marriage Murder

Eric Ward thinks he is happily married until he discovers that his wife, Anne, has been spending rather too much time with a business associate. Suspicious and angry, Ward finds comfort in the arms of a beautiful stranger. But when his new lover is found dead, he must do everything he can to avoid becoming the focus of a murder inquiry that could wreck his future. As police pressure looms, Ward makes his own inquiries. Increasingly desperate to find the girl’s killer, he begins to learn more about a shady Tyneside world of drugs, dodgy property deals and illicit nightclubs. And when he learns that the trouble in Newcastle has its roots in Asian big business, he begins to fear for his own life as he seeks the final answers on the Tyne. Tense and gripping, hurtling forward to a nail biting finish, A Form of Death is the latest in Roy Lewis’s popular Eric Ward series.

The Nightwalker / The Wasteful Murder

An explosion at the plant leaves one of his clients dead. Joe Paulson wasn’t a criminal exactly but his after hours activities raiding the dustbins of the great and good, meant he was despised by many for the secrets he held in his grasp. While the police struggle to separate the facts from the rumors circulating down on the seedier side of town, Ward’s marriage slowly unravels before his eyes as the past continues to dog his footsteps. And when an old favor is called in, he may have no choice but to put his own life in danger. An emotionally tense thriller from a master of investigative crime, The Nightwalker is the latest in Roy Lewis’ popular Eric Ward series.

The reason is that one of the crew, Edwards, has been caught smuggling drugs. But now he s been removed from the ship, why can t the voyage go ahead? Things get even more complicated when Edwards is killed on his way into the courtroom. When Ward finally gets to talk to the police, he finds that the Sierra Nova is under investigation by the International Maritime Bureau. They want him to betray his client s confidence and assist them with their case. It isn t long before Ward finds himself immersed in the dangerous world of international conspiracy and modern day piracy.

Dead Man Running / The Slaughterhouse Murder

When a casual acquaintance offers to lease one of his outbuildings for cash, the temptation of making a little money on the side is too good to turn down. He agrees and doesn’t inquire too closely into what might be happening there. It’s the worst decision Fenton has ever made. A police raid on his barn uncovers the production of ‘smokies’ illegal meat manufacturing and the farmer is accused as an accessory. The criminal underworld that Fenton has unwittingly entered stretches far beyond the local countryside. It is down to lawyer Eric Word to rescue Fenton but it soon becomes apparent that meat manufacturing is the least of their worries. Botched operations, a divided and corrupt workforce, and a bleak landscape filled with desperate and disillusioned characters provide the backdrop for Ward’s chilling journey into the dark underworld of the north, where it is not always clear who is running, or exactly whom they are running from.

Death Squad / The Football Murder

Tyneside solicitor Eric Ward has a new client: Dieter Barschel, an ex professional footballer charged with drug dealing at a Newcastle racecourse. In managing to secure bail for his client, Eric precipitates another murder investigation, this time with connections stretching far outside Tyneside’s borders. While defending Barschel, Eric manages to annoy one of the prosecuting witnesses, DCI Charlie Spate. Nevertheless, the two men find that they must work together to try and resolve the mess that they feel partly responsible for creating. Meanwhile, Spate is almost as obsessed with the charms of DE Elaine Start as he is with solving the case, but embarrassing revelations about his acquaintance with Romy Arendt, a prostitute, may threaten both his career and possible chance of romance. But when Conroy disappears, and the Zodiac Killer strikes again, this time on Tyneside, Ward finds himself involved once more, alongside CI Spate who is under pressure for his apparent incompetence in tracking Conroy.
