John E. Douglas Books Overview

Broken Wings

An electrifying novel of intrigue, Broken Wings moves beyond the authors’ New York Times bestselling nonfiction and takes readers along on a furious psychological duel between the nation’s top profiler and a ruthless criminal mastermind. The director of the FBI is dead. Officially it’s being called suicide; unofficially, it’s a murder. On the first morning of his retirement as head of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Profiling Unit, Jake Donovan is summoned back to Quantico and into the most dangerous, volatile, and politically charged case of his career. After suffering a brutal attack from assailants who may have been linked to the director’s death, Jake enlists an elite team of ‘Broken Wings‘ damaged goods agents like himself who have been frozen out of the FBI. Equipped with a state of the art airplane that serves as a mobile lab and headquarters, this secretly funded rogue squad of expert mindhunters is going to do what the Bureau can’t or won’t: follow the trail of evidence, no matter where it leads, no matter whom it implicates.

Man Down

This time the chips are truly down for Hollywood Jake Donovan. A government scientist, Dr. William Rush, has been found dead in a North Carolina state park; he’d been doing sensitive research possibly a weapons project and he’d been brutally murdered. His colleague, Janice Callahan, is also missing…
A crime of passion? Or a threat to national security? Jake Donovan down on his luck after being mysteriously yanked from the investigation of an assassination attempt on the First Lady and his Broken Wings team are assigned to the case by their wealthy benefactor Mrs. De Vries, who also happens to be Janice Callahan’s aunt. But it’s not going to be easy for Jake. As he digs deeper into the mystery he is shot at, his car is blown up, and his fingerprints keep turning up where they shouldn’t. His personal life is no picnic either: His Broken Wings colleague and girlfriend Katie leaves him for her ex husband; his former wife has had it with the danger his work brings to her and their two children; and he is plagued by nightmares of the Black Diamond kidnapper, the one criminal whom he has never been able to catch. But the worst blow comes when Donovan’s adored son, Eric, is abducted right out of his own bed. Hollywood Jake Donovan finally knows what it’s like to be a victim. In their efforts to save the country, as well as the offspring of one of their own, the Broken Wings team races across America on the trail of a complicated conspiracy. Can they get to the center of the web in time? Once again, John Douglas has delivered a mesmerizing and edge of the seat ride into the world of criminal profiling.

Mindhunter

During his twenty five year career with the Investigative Support Unit, Special Agent John Douglas became a legendary figure in law enforcement, pursuing some of the most notorious and sad*istic serial killers of our time: the man who hunted prostitutes for sport in the woods of Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer, and Seattle’s Green River killer, the case that nearly cost Douglas his life. As the model for Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, Douglas has confronted, interviewed, and studied scores of serial killers and assassins, including Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, and Ed Gein, who dressed himself in his victims’ peeled skin. Using his uncanny ability to become both predator and prey, Douglas examines each crime scene, reliving both the killer’s and the victim’s actions in his mind, creating their profiles, describing their habits, and predicting their next moves. Now, in chilling detail, the legendary Mindhunter takes us behind the scenes of some of his most gruesome, fascinating, and challenging cases and into the darkest recesses of our worst nightmares.

Journey Into Darkness

There is only one John Douglas. We first met Douglas in ‘Mindhunter,’ which told the story of his brilliant and terrifying with the FBI until his retirement in 1995. And now, again with coauthor Mark Olshaker, he goes even further. We accompany him on the ‘Journey Into Darkness‘ that marks every case he examines; every instance in which he helps police identify the unknown perpetrator of a violent series of rapes, kidnappings, or murders through his remarkable criminal personality profiling. In this fascinating audio experience, we journey with some of the brilliant and sensitive agents John has trained, who have carried on his work. We take a startlingly fresh look at the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman as if John had been asked by the LAPD to identify the killer through behavioral profiling. And we hear how a lifetime around killers and their victims has shaped his views on justice and punishment. The ‘Journey Into Darkness‘ is a perilous one, but ultimately a hopeful one as well. For not only do we see from the men and women who track the most sad*istic of criminals what a powerful weapon profiling has become, we also get advice on how we might better keep our children, our families and ourselves safe from harm. By making the ‘Journey Into Darkness‘ with John Douglas and his colleagues, we come away with an insight into the human condition that no one else can offer.

Pocket Guide to the Crime Classification Manual

This is a pocket sized key to a guide which classifies the three major felonies murder, arson and sexual assault, based upon the motivation of the offender. The guide attempts to standardize the language and terminology used throughout the criminal justice system. It should provide police officers, detectives, homicide investigators, and other law enforcement personnel, in any size community, access to the same information as used by the FBI to coordinate their investigations. The guide forms the basis of contemporary investigative ‘profiling’, the acclaimed strategy enebling law enforcement personnel to solve a crime by generating a profile of the suspect. Drawing from such disciplines as nursing, psychiatry, and psychology, each of the three crime classification groups reflect current relevant research on actual criminal cases. Each classification includes an in depth case study, which analyses an actual crime, giving users examples of specific crime scene characteristics to look for. The CCM will facilitate communication within criminal justice and mental health professionals. Furthermore, it develops a database for investigative research.

Unabomber

When Federal Agents raided a remote Montana cabin to apprehend Theodore J. Kaczynski, the alleged Unabomber, they discovered what amounted to a one room bomb factory. Now bestselling author John Douglas, the former FBI Unit Chief who originated the Unabomber profle, reveals the remarkable inside story behind the bureau’s eighteen year manhunt, the elusive Kaczynski, and his dramatic arrest. Douglas’ expert knowledge and firsthand experience bring all aspects of this fascinating case to vivid life: the bomber’s first calculated, daring attempts to severely injure his targets; his chilling turn to murder; the FBI’s frustrating attempts to build an investigation; the controversy surrounding the Unabomber‘s manifesto; and the unexpected twists that brought the FBI to the outskirts of Lincoln, Montana. Go behind the scenes of one of the most painstaking, dangerous and secretive FBI investigations of our time, as John Douglas delves into the mind, methods, and madness of America’s most wanted serial killer.

Obsession (With: Mark Olshaker)

In this eagerly awaited new book by the international best selling authors of Mindhunter and Journey into Darkness, master FBI profiler John Douglas takes us into the minds and souls of both the hunters and the hunted. The legendary former head of the FBI’s Investigative Support Unit, Douglas was the pioneer of modern behavioral profiling of serial criminals. In Mindhunter, we followed his development into a modern, real life Sherlock Holmes as he tracked down the Atlanta child murderer, San Francisco’s Trailside Killer, and Seattle’s Green River Killer a chase that nearly cost him his life. In Journey into Darkness, he directed his unique skills particularly to crimes against children and young adults, and showed how the quest for closure for the survivors does not always end simply with catching the killer. Written with Mark Olshaker, the coauthor of Douglas’s previous books and an acclaimed novelist, journalist, and filmmaker, Obsession is vital reading for anyone seeking to understand and prevent violent crime. In Obsession, Douglas once again takes us fascinatingly behind the scenes, focusing his expertise on predatory crimes, primarily against women. With a deep sense of compassion for the victims and an uncanny understanding of the perpetrators, Douglas looks at the obsessions that lead to rape, stalking, and sexual murder through such cases as Ronnie Shelton, the serial rapist who terrorized Cleveland; Joseph Thompson, New Zealand’s South Auckland rapist; the stalking and killing of television star Rebecca Schaeffer; and New York’s notorious ‘Preppie Murder.’ He plumbs the minds and motives of those who commit these terrifying and seemingly inexplicable offenses, using as examples his study of Ed Gein, Gary Heidnick, and Ted Bundy, the three obsessional killers who made up the composite character of ‘Buffalo Bill’ in The Silence of the Lambs. Douglas himself was the model for Special Agent Jack Crawford. But Douglas also looks at obsession on the other side of the moral spectrum: his own career long obsession with hunting these predators; the obsession of the directors of a model police department’s victim’s program in Virginia that has literally saved the lives of survivors; and the obsession of a brilliant young lawyer who has established an innovative school in Harlem to combat crime, drugs, and despair. Finally, there’s the poignant and moving story of Gene and Peggy Schmidt and their daughter, Jennifer, whose sister, Stephanie, was viciously murdered by a paroled rapist in Kansas, and who channeled their grief and anguish into fighting for a milestone Supreme Court ruling. Douglas analyzes the critical lessons of the Stephanie Schmidt case, which demonstrates the new empowerment galvanizing the victim’s rights movement. In a final section that serves as a call to action, Douglas shows us how we can all fight back and protect ourselves, our families, and loved ones against the scourge of the violent predators in our midst. But the first step is insight and understanding, and no one is better qualified to penetrate obsession than John Douglas.

The Cases That Haunt Us (With: Mark Olshaker)

America’s foremost expert on criminal profiling provides his uniquely gripping analysis of seven of the most notorious murder cases in the history of crime from the Whitechapel murders to JonBenet Ramsey often contradicting conventional wisdom and legal decisions. Jack the Ripper. Lizzie Borden. The Zodiac Killer. Certain homicide cases maintain an undeniable, almost mystical hold on the public imagination. They touch a nerve deep within us because of the personalities involved, their senseless depravity, the nagging doubts about whether justice was done, or because, in some instances, no suspect has ever been identified or caught. In The Cases That Haunt Us, twenty five year FBI veteran John Douglas, profiling pioneer and master of modern criminal investigative analysis, and author and filmmaker Mark Olshaker, the team behind the bestselling Mindhunter series, explore the tantalizing mysteries that both their legions of fans and law enforcement professionals ask about most. Among the questions they tackle: Was Jack the Ripper actually the Duke of Clarence, eldest grandson of Queen Victoria, or perhaps a practicing medical doctor? And did highly placed individuals within Scotland Yard have a good idea of the Ripper’s identity, which they never revealed? Douglas and Olshaker create a detailed profile of the killer, and reveal their chief suspect. Was Lizzie Borden truly innocent of the murder of her father and stepmother as the Fall River, Massachusetts, jury decided, or was she the one who took the ax and delivered those infamous ‘whacks’? Through a minute by minute behavioral analysis of the crime, the authors come to a convincing conclusion. Did Bruno Richard Hauptmann single handedly kidnap the baby son of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, the most famous couple in the world, or was he an innocent man caught up and ultimately executed in a relentless rush to judgment in the ‘crime of the century’? What kind of person could kill six year old JonBenet Ramsey on Christmas night in her own home? Douglas was called in on the case shortly after the horrifying murder, and his conclusions are hard hitting and controversial. Why, in the face of the majority of public, media, and law enforcement opinion, including former FBI colleagues, does Douglas believe that John and Patricia Ramsey did not murder their daughter? And what is the forensic and behavioral evidence he brings to bear to make his claim? Taking a fresh and penetrating look at each case, the authors reexamine and reinterpret accepted facts and victimology using modern profiling and the techniques of criminal analysis developed by Douglas within the FBI. This book deconstructs the evidence and widely held beliefs surrounding each case and rebuilds them with fascinating and haunting results.
