Cyprus was placed under British control in 1878 as a result of the Cyprus Convention, which granted control of the island to Britain in return for British support of the Ottoman Empire in the Russian Turkish War. Little was known about the country at the time and this work is the result of a visit by Baker, an English explorer and author, in 1879.
