Murray worked as an English professor at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks from 1988 through 1994. He has published two dozen nature books, including A Republic of Rivers, Grizzly Bears, and Out Among the Wolves. In 1994 Murray was named series editor for the Sierra Club nature writing annual. His reviews, interviews, essays, and articles have appeared in such periodicals as The Washington Post, The Bloomsbury Review, and Publisher's Weekly.About the PhotographerAfter receiving a masters degree in fire ecology from UC Berkeley, Don Pitcher worked on wildlife projects in Wyoming, California, and Alaska. He went on to photograph Compass American Guide: Wyoming, and to write three other travel guides. His photographs have appeared in many books, magazines, posters, and other publications. Don bases his travels around Alaska and the world from his Anchorage home where he lives with his wife and daughter.
