Book Description:
Manor, Pennsylvania was once part of the area known as Denmark Manor, one of the 'manors' or estates acquired from William Penn's descendents. The early residents were Pennsylvania Dutch farmers who settled on the rich farmland along Brush Creek. Grain became the primary source of income in Manor Valley between 1790 and 1850. With the arrival of the railroad in the mid nineteenth century, the town of Manor was developed along the Pennsylvania Railroad's main line. Manor Valley Railroad was built later to provide access to the coal mines between Manor and Claridge, and the railroad town prospered as new industries were developed. Manor Borough, then known as Manor Station, was incorporated in 1890. The Pennsylvania Railroad bisects the town east to west and Brush Creek surrounds it on three sides. This book honors the citizens of Manor, past and present, who have made the community a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Through this publication, the Manor Book Committee has demonstrated what an independent group of inspired citizens can accomplish when unified by common purpose. As a result of their efforts, the story of Manor can be retold to future generations, and there are so many great stories to tell. Stories about Manor National Bank, Manor Theater, Manor businesses and industries and Old Manor Whiskey will bring a smile to your face and a tear to your eye. Other accounts of minstrel shows, orchestras, Labor Day celebrations, community picnics and Manor's athletic teams provide an in depth look at the town's recreational and social activities. History is so much more than a chronological record of dates and facts. These stories are, primarily, about the industrious people of Manor, Pennsylvania. Take a journey back in time and you'll agree that it was well worth the effort to preserve Manor's past.
