This text, part of the revision and expansion of the 'Calendar of State Papers Domestic 1547 1580' published in 1856, includes papers of key importance in the study of England's first woman ruler, Mary Tudor, and her problematic marriage. The summaries include correspondence between Mary's consort, Philip II of Spain, and the English Privy Council, which illustrate the uncertainties and tensions of the crown matrimonial. It also includes first hand accounts of Wyatt's rebellion and the depositions (some extracted by torture) of later conspirators, emphasizing the government's preoccupation with security. A large group of letters chronicle the career of Edward Courtenay, last representative of the old royal house. Fiscal, naval and military affairs dominate the last part of the colection, as the Queen's marriage finlly drew England into a war which was to cost the crown the last possession in contienetal Europe.
