Book Description:
In celebration of the bicentennial of the United States Military Academy (USMA) in 2002, this book biographs 200 West Point graduates who have made significant contribution to and impact upon America s scientific professions (mathematicians, scientists, engineers, technologists). The biographies emphasize the professional aspects of their lives, while highlighting noteworthy accomplishments such as military service, political service, humanitarian deeds, business success, and personal adventure. Many photographs and portraits of the honorees are included. USMA s primary mission is to develop leaders for America s military, but as America s first science based engineering college, West Point s impact on the technical and educational cultures of America has been significant and noteworthy. West Point s leader development system, which has creditably produced America s military leaders for two centuries, also developed numerous technical leaders, who have greatly impacted American history. This book provides insights and highlights on 200 of the most significant of these people. This group is referred to as The Scientific 200 (or The 200) in this volume. Of the nearly 58,500 West Point graduates (as of June 2001), thousands have served in technical positions or as technical educators (both in and out of the military). These 200 are exemplary representatives of the numerous successful graduates, who have contributed to America s technological achievements.
