Book Description: Human capital is considered to be one of the pillars on which the development of tourism rests. It goes without saying then, that lack of trained and skilled manpower could deal a significant blow to the growth of tourism owing to its labour intensive nature. Within Asia and the Pacific region, governmental laxity and corporate profit conscious attitudes towards tourism education and training, as well as lack of trainers and teaching staff, have been identified as some of the factors responsible for inadequate professionalism in its tourism industry. Accelerated tourist growth rates projected for the New Millennium calls for an equally accelerated preparedness with respect to workforce. Human Resource Development in Asia and the Pacific, the product of a UNWTO/ESCAP high level technical seminar on challenges for human resource development in tourism in the Asia Pacific region in the New Millennium, analyses the current situation of tourism manpower in the region and sets forth some policies and strategies to be adopted if Asia Pacific tourism is to be in a position to face the challenges posed by the expected growth rates.
