Book Description: Hate crimes are offences committed on grounds of ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, political opinion or disability, and can include verbal abuse, physical assault, intimidation or damage to property. Given the rise in recent years in the level of such incidents in Northern Ireland, the Committee's report examines the reasons for the increase; the effectiveness of enforcement measures and responses by the central and local government, community organisations, employers, trade unions and Churches to tackle the issue and give support to the victims of such prejudice; and the effectiveness of the existing law on hate crime in Northern Ireland and proposed reforms. The Committee's findings include i) concern that, until recently, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) had no formal definition of sectarian hate crime; and ii)the pace of policy and strategy development and leadership by Government and enforcement measures by the PSNI will need to be speeded up. A number of recommendations are made for co ordinated and urgent action to halt the rise in hate crimes, in order to avoid the serious consequences for the pace of social improvement in Northern Ireland.
