Book Description:
In the present volume, the two essays provide exciting new insight into the mental world of the Anglo Saxons by showing on the one hand how they understood the processes of reading and assimilating knowledge, and, on the other, how they conceived of time and passage of the seasons. In the field of art history, two essays treat two of the best known Anglo Saxon manuscripts: the 'Book of Durrow' and the 'Galba Psalter'. In another essay, the illustrations in Anglo Saxon manuscripts of Prudentius are made to yield new information on the dissemination of the Psychomachia. Some important advances are made in the field of Old English prose, through the consideration of a hitherto unpublished sermon entitle 'Evil Tongues', the study of various prose saints' Lives and a pioneering study of the 'Solomon and Saturn' dialogues. The fields of palaeography and liturgy are also importantly represented. The volume includes the invaluable annual bibliography of 1996 publications in all branches of Anglo Saxon studies.
