Book Description:
This volume looks at the work of E. P. Sanders, considered one of the fathers of what has been called the third quest for the historical Jesus. 'Jesus as Restoration Prophet' is one of four volumes in which leading historical-Jesus scholars engage with, and build upon, the historical-Jesus contributions made by four key contributors to the field. This volume looks at the work of E. P. Sanders. Sanders is considered one of the fathers of what has been called the third quest for the historical Jesus. He argues for an eschatological Jesus (in contrast to Borg), and views Jesus as being a prophet who is proclaiming the imminent restoration of Israel in God's eschatological kingdom. He is well known for his work on second-Temple Judaism, such as 'Judaism: Practice and Belief 63 BCE - 66 CE' (1992) which provides some of the background for his ground-breaking work, 'Jesus and Judaism' (1985), and later, 'The Historical Figure of Jesus' (1995). Formerly the 'Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement', a book series that explores the many aspects of New Testament study including historical perspectives, social-scientific and literary theory, and theological, cultural and contextual approaches. 'The Early Christianity in Context' series, a part of 'JSNTS', examines the birth and development of early Christianity up to the end of the third century CE. The series places Christianity in its social, cultural, political and economic context. European Seminar on Christian Origins and 'Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus Supplement' are also part of 'JSNTS'.
