Book Description:
Booth came into prominence in the 1960s with his minimalistic fields of black, as radical then as his figurative paintings of hot and vivid colors were in the '70s. In all his art, the themes of humanity, nature and human nature interconnect and drive his imagination. National Gallery of Victoria curator Jason Smith states that the artist bridges the 20th and 21st centuries. This publication introduces him to a 'younger generation that shares his concern for the fate of the planet.' The influences of his early years in the industrial area of Northern England and day labourer are evident in his translation of the red glow from fires of steel mill furnaces. At the same time, his gestural handling of paint and forms seem to rise from his subconscious. His work is found in the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art, and he represented Australia at the 1982 Venice Biennale.
