This edition offers the 'Life' as Roger North finally conceived of it. Assessment of North's place in the history of life writing based on the evidence of the 1742 version has misrepresented and, Mary Chan claims, underestimated North's achievement. This edition aims to allow a new assessment of North and his work. Early in the 18th century, North worked out a 'new' form of biographical writing, significant despite its having been largely unknown, requiring us to readjust our 'history'. North's work can be seen itself as a mirror of contemporary concerns with historiography and draws attention particularly to late 17th century notions of historical truth and its presentation.
