Book Description: Cleric and civil rights activist Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. The first black general secretary of the South African Council of Churches, Tutu preached tirelessly against apartheid and for reconciliation. He was named bishop of Johannesburg in 1984 and became the first black archbishop of Cape Town in 1986. After apartheid ended, he was appointed by Nelson Mandela to head the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate human rights crimes.
