Book Description:
Leonard Bramer was born in Delft in 1596, and was a well respected artist who worked for most of his mature years until his death in 1674. Well known for his 'history' paintings, which dealt with religious or mythological subjects, his commissions to decorate ceilings and walls, and his illustrations for translations of classical works, he also composed a series of drawings of peddlers and artisans. This book presents Leonard Bramer's visual poem to the working people of Delft: cobblers, bakers, turners, weavers, glaziers, dairy maids, fishwives and peddlers selling brooms, stoneware crockery and food. Bramer called this puzzling series of drawings 'straatwerken', meaning 'street works'. The text provides a complete description for each of the 66 drawings, background historical information, and relevant history of art developments. It also traces Bramer's connections to other 17th century Dutch artistic productions.
