Book Description:
Originally published as an article titled 'The Pursuit of Leviathan: A History of Whaling on the North Carolina Coast' in the January 1988 issue of the North Carolina Historical Review, this history of whaling provides a fascinating account of an economic enterprise rich in the romance of the sea. Whale fishing began as an important economic activity in the seventeenth century. In North Carolina, shore whaling prevailed, although during much of the nineteenth century the so-called Hatteras grounds attracted numerous pelagic whalers from New England. By the First World War, shore whaling in North Carolina had largely disappeared with the depletion of whales from overfishing. Still, the legends and lore persist, and the Simpsons have captured the sense of high adventure along the Outer Banks each time the cry 'Thar she blows' went up. (Jeffrey J. Crow, from the Foreword to this text)
