Book Description: The structural core of the book consists of brief analyses of Michelangelo s major work with the help of 37 illustrations. Its purpose is to present the complex figure of the artist in a clear and attractive way. The recounting of the artist s life is enriched with biographical anecdotes, as well as some of his poems and letters. These examples provide attractive glimpses into Michelangelo the man and the artist. Examples: The ten godfathers at Michelangelo s baptism The snowman he built in the Medici palazzo His mother s portrait in the Madonna of the Vatican Pieta A menu written and illustrated by the artist His two best friends: Vittoria Colonna and Mario Cavalieri The sonnet and drawing of himself painting the Sistine chapel The stories of Biagio de Cesena, his critic 'in hell forever' and of David s 'big' nose, etc. It is the number and the variety of such material that gives the book its unique character. The language is meant to challenge and enrich. Readers are helped by glossaries of terms and proper names at the end of the book. The book evolved from Dr. Mower s notes written in preparation for his History of Art, Advanced Placement classes at The Bishop s School in La Jolla, CA.
