' All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that saerificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.' Ecclesiastes ii. 2. As the wheel of time never stands, so the catalogue of events is never complete. One moves on with the other. One makes way for the other; as time opens the door, events unceasingly follow closely behind. Time has no vacuum. Every moment is filled with blessings, actions, or important events. All events, as to their moral character, are either just and right, or wrong and unrighteous. Some are essentially needful for the right order of the Divine Government, and the welfare of His creatures, arising from the will of God and the nature of things; others are produced by the free volitionof man, which frequently is neither in accordance with God's purpose, nor compatible with the nature and harmony of Divine law and providence. Most events are comedies of providence; but there are others which are terrible tragedies. Ordinary events are regular and constant; and the impression of joy or sorrow which they produce, is neither deep nor lasting. They are viewed and received as commensurate with the common order of things; they do not reach the very depth of human feeling. But there are some events, peculiar and extraordinary in their character and result. They are like the terrific storm, awful and tremendous in power and effect; or like the convulsive atmosphere and the roaring thunder, shrouding the magnificent smile of the sun, and causing universal fear and consternation.
