Book Description: By the tenth grade, at risk students perform at fourth to fifth grade levels in the basic skills and are weak in many higher order thinking skills. As the skill levels of these students plateau and the demand increase, the performance gap continues to widen. Yet the secondary school has received little attention in the current focus on ensuring appropriate educational opportunities for students with poor skills and knowledge bases. The authors and editors of this volume define their goal as working to close the gap between where these students are socially and academically and where they need to be in order to be successful in school and in life. The book addresses how to work with students in building basic and higher order thinking skills, and applying these skills to content area learning.
