From there, Harriet traveled from one house to another, lying in the bottom of a wagon under a rough sack, walking long miles through forests and swamps. Finally she reached Philadelphia, in the free state of Pennsylvania. But Harriet was not satisfied with only freeing herself. Over the next twenty years she made nineteen more trips back and forth into slave territory, guiding slaves to freedom. The escaped slaves called her Moses, because she led her people out of slavery. The Civil War brought an end to the terrible practice of slavery - but it also left deep wounds across the United States. As you learn more about this war's conflicts, you will gain a better understanding of what makes America the nation it is today.
