The Choix des plus belles fleurs (Selection of the most beautiful flowers) is the masterpiece of Redout s later years. This most celebrated of botanical artists (1759 1840) served as drawing master to the queens and princesses of France for half a century. Among his pupils were Louise and Marie d Orl ans, to whom the Choix was dedicated. The great multivolume monographs of Redout s middle period the roses, the lilies, the succulent plants were followed in his later years by elegant quarto albums featuring selections of the most beautiful or striking plants. This, the finest of these, features 144 superb stipple engravings depicting fruit as well as flowers, complemented by a retrospective preface by Redout himself. This visually stunning Octavo Edition includes a complete English translation. Commentary by Sandra Raphael.
