Book Description: This is a book of memories: a record of past summers spent fostering my career as a marine scientist. During the summer of 1964, I was enrolled as a zoology graduate student at the University of Washington s Friday Harbor Laboratories. After receiving my doctorate in 1968, I spent the remaining thirty three years as a biology professor at Bucknell University. The summer of 1964 in many ways prepared me for teaching field courses in the marine sciences. At Bucknell, I offered courses with regular field trips for undergraduate students to the Duke University Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina, as well as nineteen consecutive field courses in tropical marine biology to undergraduate students each June from 1985 through 2003 in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. These memoirs are gleaned from field notebooks in which I maintained a day to day record of my learning experiences while in the islands. With the exception of the short story at the end of this book, all that I have recorded here is based on real people and my experiences.
