The objective of this book is to set out in a single volume the basic principles of public international law. In so doing, an attempt has been made to select those topics that traditionally feature on an undergraduate course in public international law. The text commences with an examination of the general principles before proceeding to consider each of the principal subject areas. In producing this volume an attempt has been made to examine not only the history of public international law but also to consider the economic, social and cultural factors that have influenced the development of the subject. Each chapter examines the history of a topic and the present legal position before seeking to evaluate any relevant judgments of international courts and tribunals. This single volume treatment should be useful to students of both international law and the related discipline of international relations. The objective of this new text is to provide within a single volume a guide to the basic principles of public international law. The subject of public international law has acquired a heightened degree of prominence in the last decade; it is now widely studied in universities and its principles often constitute the justification for decisions in municipal courts. The author seeks to outline the basic principles of public international law while giving proper emphasis to the social and economic context in which such rules operate. All the elements of an undergraduate course are considered; each chapter examines both the historical evolution of the law and the present practice.
