Book Description: South Africa's forests, savannas, shrublands and grasslands are home to some 22,000 species of wildflowers, many of great beauty. Proteas with flower heads like painted cups or bristling pincushions jostle for space in the fynbos shrublands among brush like reeds and heathers studded with shiny tubular florets. Curiously shaped succulents, many bearing glossy flowers that reflect the midday glare, thrive in the drier parts; and a host of colourful bulbs and annual herbs brighten the spring countryside. The region may account for as much as 10 per cent of the world's wildflower species, and each year sees the addition of newly discovered species to the growing list.
