This is the first comprehensive study of Virgil Grotfeldt s complex development as an artist. Born in 1948, Grotfeldt has progressed through a number of phases in his work, each revealing an interest in, or connection to, both American and European art and philosophy. His influences have been eclectic and include: photo realism, mysticism, and anthropology. More recently, his work has mainly dealt with natural phenomena. These interests, along with his admiration of artists like Odilon Redon or Victor Hugo, helped to form his vision. He frequently works with unusual materials like coal and metal dust. A native Texan, Grotfeldt s connection to Europe grew out of his cooperation with the Dutch artist Waldo Bien.
